ABOUT US Mission Statement The mission of the The Center The California Center for the Arts, Escondido is situated on a 12-acre campus in downtown Escondido adjacent to Escondido City Hall and Grape Day Park. The campus is comprised of a 1,523-seat Concert Hall, a 406-seat Center Theater, a visual arts Museum, art and dance studios, and a Conference Center containing meeting and banquet facilities. Groundbreaking occurred on June 22, 1991. Since its opening on October 1, 1994, The Center has attracted more than one-million visitors through its performing and visual arts presentations, events in the Conference Center, and education programs. The firm of Moore Ruble Yudell of Santa Monica, Calif. designed The Center. The General Contractor on the project was McKee Construction Company. Theatre consultation was by Theatre Projects Consultants, Inc. The acoustician was the Talaske Group. From its inception, visionaries planning The Center had a three-part purpose. The Center would be a place where people could come for entertainment - to enjoy the visual and performing arts, and of equal importance, The Center would become a focal point for a comprehensive arts education program. Additionally, the California Center for the Arts, Escondido was to serve as a community center. By combining these three elements: the visual and performing arts, arts education and a community center, citizens benefit from the three collectively more so than if they operated separately. The Center and Escondido Revitalizing downtown Escondido was one of the goals community leaders had in mind when they undertook the bold step of creating the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. It's been nearly 10 years since their vision for a more vital and prosperous community began to take shape, and the results have more than manifested themselves. The Center draws hundreds of thousands of patrons to Escondido's downtown annually. A stroll down Escondido's Grand Avenue today is a profoundly different experience than it was prior to The Center's opening in 1994. Escondido's investment in its Arts Center is paying off, and nowhere is that more evident than in downtown Escondido's Business Improvement District. In the last 10 years, sales tax revenues have increased, new businesses have come in at a faster rate than ever before, and the value of property has risen. And that is just the beginning. In 2003, the Mingei International Museum Satellite opened in downtown Escondido, proving that this community has become a vibrant center for cultural arts. A 16-screen multiplex move theater recently opened across the street from The Center. With it, the multiplex will also bring new restaurants, retail and specialty shops. Additional office space is being built, and 500 units of market-rate housing are expected to be completed in the next few years. These projects give central Escondido a striking ambience - a place to live, work and play in an urban-style neighborhood nestled in the heart of a community-oriented city. Organization The Center is incorporated as the California Center for the Arts, Escondido Foundation under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service code as a non-profit corporation. The Center is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees and managed by a professional staff. A portion of The Center’s funding comes from corporate, foundation and individual gifts and government grants. Earned revenue sources include ticket sales, food and beverage sales, and contract services. Subscribe to Archways, our email newsletter to be notified about all of the Center for the Arts' events.
