“Seeing is the miracle by which we become acquainted with the infinite beauty that surrounds us.”
Duane R. Light
A prolific author, teacher and watercolor artist, Duane R. Light made his mark on North County San Diego beginning in the 1980s when he moved here and founded Studio West Gallery. every know crevice, it overwhelms any surface, it defines sounds, smells and
sight." - Leah Ollman
Nationally recognized and locally based artist Patricia
Patterson creates theatrical installations and sumptuously painted snapshots,
providing a visual account of domestic and outdoor life on Inishmore (one of the
Aran Islands located off the western coast of Ireland) and her home in Southern
California. Her work has a richness that can only be achieved after years
of delving deep into a particular subject. This retrospective exhibition is
comprised of works spanning her 50-year career shown together for the first
time.

Born and raised on the East Coast, Patterson studied at the Parsons School of
Design in New York before embarking on an adventure that would seer the course
of her artistic career. At the age of nineteen she read J.M. Synge's, The
Aran Islands, and soon found herself on Inishmore. She spent the next two
years immersing herself in an "ever-changing spectacle" of land, sky,
water, history, people and language. On the islands, Patterson found
craggy, rugged terrain and difficult living conditions that provided a sharp
contrast to the warm and generous character of the people she met. Since
her original visit, Paterson has revisited the island a dozen times for extended
sojourns, always returning to her home in New York, and later San Diego.
These experiences serve as the origin to a life's work that offers a series of
individual glimpses into the lives of others, like scenes from a film that
define a set of characters and places of daily life - an everyday theater.
At the core, Patterson makes art about ordinary things, a subject matter that
is, as she puts it, "...tricky...Using domestic material is risky; it can
seem too sentimental, too intimate." Yet Patterson expertly navigates
around sentimentality and intimacy, creating works monumental both in scale and
subject matter. Drawing on a continual stream of inspiration - from the
everyday world around her to varied works of art and artists such as Giotto,
Piero Della Francesca and Yamoto-e scrolls - her discerning eye takes in
everything, creating an experience of connectedness, in her art of daily life.

Interact, create and discover while you explore the works of Coris Bittar, Wes Bruce, Ingram Ober and Marisol Rendon. The interactive installations presented by these artists examine various connotations and significances of the word green introducing thoughts on cultural identity, human imagination, world hunger, alternative energies and the creative process. Each installation includes an interactive component that will foster open communication and experimentation between you and the artist. Beginning opening night, August 14 and continuing through November 7, 2010 you will be able to alter and engage with each installation according to the artists' guidelines. Return to the Museum during Artist in Residence Week, November 9 - 14, 2010, and watch all four artists recreate and/or add to their installations in response to the changes you've made.
Come in and discover your way through Bruce's nostalgic architectural forms. Touch, move and draw Rendon's furry felt fruit and vegetable sculptures. Create massive green paintings on canvas in Ober's Green Century installation and hear the sounds of Arab, Chinese and Aztec cultures when exploring Bittar's world of pattern
Wander through the Museum's hallways to find video documenting the fabrication and installation of these works for an intriguing behind the scenes peek into the process of mounting an art exhibition.

One’s naturally accepted culture, society, habitat and political sphere can seem invisible until pressed up against a disparate culture and its methods or histories. Based on his recent experiences in China, American born artist Seth Augustine has created a body of work that presents a visual and audible cacophony, a complex hybrid of China and the United States. This precariously balanced relationship is exposed through a fusing of similarities and divergences that exist between the two cultures. Chimerica Dreality explores the misconceptions and complexities between past condition, present configuration, and future desire of the American-Chinese interplay. Augustine urges contemplation of the varied worldviews existing in both countries, as well as encourages hands-on engagement that highlight issues of public health, government power and control, illegal migration, and the blurring of public and private spheres.

Material Matters showcases work by 23 members of Allied Craftsmen, a juried organization founded over 50 years ago comprised of nationally and internationally recognized artists currently living and working in the San Diego area. Their multi-media work is presented as immersive installations, engulfing the viewer in a visceral experience of both material and object. Each artist pursues their inspiration through innovative process and unconventional design using materials such as wood, clay, wire, fabric, metal, gold and silver.
Born in Pennsylvania and currently living and working in Elfin Forest, California, Anne Mudge has been creating and exhibiting artwork for over 40 years. Her most recent series articulates the contextual and open-ended balance between chance and circumstance, creating a visual poetry that defies linear expression and invites the viewer to participate in the construction of meanings and associations. Fluid and elegant yet full of tension and strength, Mudge‘s hanging and wall oriented structures contort, bend and weigh within the space, interacting with each other and their surroundings through their size, shadows and delicate placement. She binds, wraps and entwines materials such as masking tape, wire, cotton cording and asphaltum into bodies that waver between sparse linearity and intricate accumulation.

Quint: Three Decades of Contemporary Art
Sustainability of the art world is based on the concerted effort of a collective commonwealth of museums, galleries, auction houses and art collectors, all linked together by a common thread - the art and the artist. This exhibition, a survey of artists shown by Quint Gallery, will explore how the vision of one local gallery has contributed to the commonwealth and document the changes seen in the artistic community of San Diego, in the art world, and for each individual artist as they have found their notoriety and artistic voice.
Featuring paintings, sculptures, installations, drawings and prints, the exhibition will include work by bold and innovative artists such as Jean Lowe, Mel Bochner, Kim MacConnel, Ryan McGinness, Manny Farber and Patricia Patterson. Exhibited together, the creations of these artists embody the vitality of the past three decades of art, and will further the public’s understanding and appreciation of our current contemporary art scene.
