Technician Intern Program
The intern program was begun to give people interested in technical theatre a chance to work in a professional “roadhouse” environment. Instruction consists of individual, group, and on-the-job training, at times working alongside union stagehands. The program consists of at least 1000 hours of instruction and on-the-job training divided into four levels. Upon successful completion of the program, the intern will then be eligible to be recommended, at the discretion of the Technical Production staff, to the stagehands union, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), as a permit worker. Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent. After an employment application has been completed at the Center Administration office, it will be referred to the Technical Coordinator, who will contact prospective candidates. Interviews will be scheduled when crew positions become available and when time in the season permits. All candidates considered for employment must take a pre-employment drug screening. This practice is designed to avoid the hiring of individuals whose use of drugs indicates a potential for impaired or unsafe job performance. The CCAE requires, as a condition of acceptance into the Stage Technician Intern program and employment, that the intern complete the entire program before applying to work with the IATSE. Advancement through the four levels of the program is dependent upon how quickly the intern can master skills and concepts, the amount of time he/she can devote to working at the CCAE, and how many events are booked in the theatres. The scheduling of promotion tests can also be dependent upon how many events are scheduled in the theatres and is completely at the discretion of the Technical Coordinator. For those students who don't necessarily wish to make technical theatre their career, the program will still be valuable in terms of learning skills that can be applied to a variety of other jobs. |
